Stalled to Strategic

Most leaders misdiagnose their own situation

You’ve tried. You’ve hired good people. You’ve invested in strategy. You’ve had the conversations. And still, something isn’t moving.

Most leaders assume it’s a people problem. Or a strategy problem. Or a resource problem.

It’s usually none of those. It’s a values problem —

and until you can see it clearly, nothing else you try will fully work.

Every organization has stated values. Most also have unstated ones — values operating beneath the surface, sometimes in direct conflict with the official story.

When those two sets collide, strategy stalls at execution. Good people work at cross-purposes. Everyone is doing their best and nothing moves.

You don’t need motivation. You need clarity. You don’t need cheerleading.

You need someone who can see what you can’t — and help you move.

Does this sound familiar?

  • You’re capable and driven — and you keep hitting the same wall

  • You thought everyone was aligned, but forward movement keeps stalling

  • The gap between strategy and execution feels impossible to close

  • Conflict in your organization is underground — hard to name, harder to address

  • You’re navigating a board or leadership team that isn’t fully with you

  • You’re building something new and you need to do it right this time

  • You’re facing a disruption that demands approaches you haven’t had to use before

The Ethical Capital Quotient

The ECQ is a structured diagnostic and strategy system I developed over 15 years working inside major organizations — at Georgetown University, as EVP at the Urban Land Institute and CEO of the Appraisal Institute; I’ve refined this system as a consultant and executive coach.

It begins with values because that’s where the answers actually are. And it ends with movement — specific, measurable progress: decisions made, conversations had, actions taken.

We can move from stalled to strategic in 90 days.

Diagnostic — Surface what’s actually blocking you. Most leaders are misdiagnosing their own situation.

One-on-Ones — Conversations with you and your key leaders to understand what’s operating beneath the surface.

Systems Review — Business communications and document review to validate what the conversations reveal.

Strategy Session — A custom session to work through findings together and build the path forward.

Actionable Plan — A realignment plan with continued accountability and benchmarking so progress is visible and measurable.

Case Study (Excerpt)

How one organizational assessment unlocked the transformational power of an online and on demand educational capability

In one year, I transformed an in-person educational operation that was barely breaking even into an online education enterprise netting 40% - and functioning as a growth engine for the whole organization. The new capability provided education for university partners, individuals, and groups with ten times more course diversity.

How was that accomplished? What were the benefits? And how could it be done now for less money and greater impact?

The organization had distinct unleveraged opportunities in the education space. Selected reasons:

  • The organization had unique access to thought leaders. People that no one else could access.

  • The new program reached two key segments, universities and early career professionals.

Selected Take Aways:

  • Consumer acceptance of creator-driven content has opened the door to experiments.

  • In a landscape where the lines between marketing, entertainment and education are more blurred than ever, expertise creates relationships and builds value.
